Dear Parents and Guardians,
I have this saying displayed in one of my offices and it reads:
“Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.” – Unknown
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Last weekend, I had the opportunity to attend both Mrs. Curren’s wake and funeral. Mrs. Curren was in her late 90’s and a resident of Danbury for her whole life. She taught in the Newfound School District for over 30 years, and in retirement, worked as a Title 1 tutor. Well into her early 90’s, Mrs. Curren would come weekly to Danbury Elementary School to read to our students in each classroom. When I moved up to be a part of this school community, she was one of the first people who touched my heart. First, she reminded me of my grandmother! Second, we both went to Keene State College. As I spent more time with her and watched how she interacted with our students and staff, she became one of my role models. Her passion for reading, her ability to connect with people, her strength of character and just her presence in the classroom
With our instant technology, students and some teenagers and adults get caught up in the number of people following them on Twitter or how many “likes” they receive on Instagram. Often, we will start to admire a talented athlete, singer or actor to only become disappointed by his/her actions, when most of the time, all we need to do is look inside our families, neighbors and community to find our true role models.
It is my hope that all of us have a few role models that push and drive us to become the best we can be in our time together. Thank you, Mrs. Curren (and others), for doing that for me!
Have a great fall weekend!
